What size for a cross-stitched name?
On 14-count Aida, a letter 10 stitches high is about 1.8 cm (0.7 in). For a birth sampler, 12 to 16 stitches high gives a very readable name; for a bookmark, 7 or 8 stitches are enough with the pixel font, which stays crisp even when tiny.
Which font?
- Pixel: drawn stitch by stitch, perfect for small sizes and dates.
- Classic: bold, very readable letters, ideal for children.
- Elegant: a serif font for weddings and frames.
- Handwritten: joined-up letters, from 16 stitches high so the curves come out well.
How much thread?
The number of skeins appears under the preview. For a name alone, one skein is almost always enough. For a bigger project, the cross-stitch calculator gives the size and thread for the whole piece, and the DMC colour chart helps you pick the colour.
You can save the chart in your space and tick off the stitches as you go, or start from a photo with photo → chart.
